You can set up a wireless printer on Mac in a few minutes. Most current printers work through AirPrint, so no driver is needed. Here are the steps.

Last updated: October 30, 2026.

Step 1: Connect the printer to WiFi

Connect the printer to the same WiFi network as your Mac. See how to connect a printer to WiFi if you need help.

Step 2: Add the printer on your Mac

Open the Apple menu, go to System Settings and choose Printers and Scanners. Click Add Printer, scan or Wi-Fi, select your printer and choose AirPrint or the recommended software from the Use menu. Click Add.

Step 3: Print a test page

Open a document, choose File then Print, select the printer and print a test page.

If your printer is not listed

Check that the Mac and printer are on the same network, restart both, and install the manufacturer’s software if the printer does not support AirPrint.

Setting Up With a USB Cable First

If the printer will not join your WiFi, connect it to the Mac by USB, add it in Printers and Scanners and use the maker’s software to send your WiFi details to the printer. Then remove the cable.

Adding a Printer by IP Address

In Printers and Scanners, click Add Printer, then the IP tab. Enter the printer’s IP address, choose the protocol such as IPP, and pick AirPrint or the recommended driver.

Using Manufacturer Software

Some features, such as scanning or custom paper settings, need the manufacturer’s app. Download it from the maker’s support page.

Setting Up Scanning

Open Image Capture or the Scan tab in Printers and Scanners, select your printer, set the file type and resolution, and scan. Scan support varies by model.

Troubleshooting

  • Restart the printer and Mac.
  • Check that both are on the same network.
  • Remove and re-add the printer.
  • Update macOS and the printer firmware.
