Learning how to print on both sides of paper saves paper and makes documents neater. Many printers do it automatically; others need a manual method. Here is how for each case.

Check whether your printer has automatic duplex
Look for duplex or two-sided printing on the product page or in the print dialog. Models without it can still print double-sided manually. See our printers with duplex printing.
On Windows
Open the document and choose Print. Open Printer Properties or Preferences and look for Two-Sided Printing or Print on Both Sides. Choose long-edge binding for portrait pages, then print.
On Mac
Choose File then Print. If options are hidden, click Show Details. Open the Layout menu and set Two-Sided to long-edge or short-edge binding, then print.
Manual double-sided printing
If there is no duplex option, print the odd pages first, flip and reload the stack as your printer manual describes, then print the even pages. Print a test page first to check the page orientation.
Tips
- Use paper heavy enough that ink does not show through.
- Let the first side dry before printing the second on an inkjet.
- Choose long-edge binding for most documents.
Choosing the Binding Edge
Long-edge binding flips the page like a book. Short-edge binding flips it like a notepad. Pick the one that matches how you will staple or read the pages, or the back side will appear upside down.
Printing a Booklet
Word and many PDF viewers have a Booklet or Pages per sheet option. Combine it with two-sided printing to make folded booklets. Print a short test first.
Manual Duplex in Word
In Word, open the print settings and choose Only Print Odd Pages. Print, flip the stack as your printer expects, then choose Only Print Even Pages and print again. Check the orientation with a two-page test.
Paper Choice
Heavier paper reduces show-through. Inkjet prints need time to dry before the second side. For laser printers, use paper rated for duplex.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the two-sided option missing?
Your printer may not support automatic duplex. Use the manual method.
Which binding should I choose?
Long-edge binding for portrait pages, short-edge for pages that flip at the top.
Does double-sided printing save ink?
It saves paper. Ink use stays about the same.
Bottom Line
Use the two-sided setting if your printer supports it, or print odd then even pages by hand.
