A turntable outputs a very weak signal, so it needs a phono preamp before it can feed regular speakers.

This guide shows common setups.

Step 1: Check for a Built-In Preamp

Many turntables have a switch labeled phono/line. If it has a preamp, you can connect to powered speakers or a receiver line input.

Step 2: Use Powered Speakers

Connect RCA cables from the turntable (or preamp) to the speakers’ RCA inputs. See our best speakers for turntables.

Step 3: No Preamp?

Add an external phono preamp between the turntable and the speakers, or use a receiver with a phono input.

Bluetooth Option

Some turntables transmit Bluetooth to wireless speakers.

Why is my record too quiet?

You may be missing a phono preamp.

Do I need a receiver?

Not with powered speakers.

Bottom Line

Check for a preamp, use RCA to powered speakers, and add a phono preamp if needed.
