A kalimba, also called a thumb piano, is a small instrument with metal tines mounted on a wooden or acrylic body. You pluck the tines with your thumbs, and each tine is tuned to one note of a scale. The main choices are the number of keys, the body material and whether the body is a hollow box or a single flat board.

The six kalimbas below run from 17 keys to 42 keys, in mahogany, koa, walnut and acrylic. Key counts, materials, sizes and extras come from each product’s listing page. We have not used these instruments ourselves. Tone and material claims are the makers’ own.

Care and Setup

  • Check each tine for a rattle before you play.
  • Tune by tapping the tine gently with a hammer, and change one tine at a time.
  • Keep the instrument in its case away from damp and direct sun.
  • Wipe the body with a dry cloth.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming every 17-key kalimba is tuned to the same scale.
  • Expecting a flat-board model to be as loud as a box model.
  • Pressing hard on a tine when tuning.
  • Ignoring conflicts in a listing between title and description.

Kalimba FAQ

How many keys should I choose?

17 keys covers many simple songs. More keys, as on the 21-key and 42-key models here, add range.

Do I need a tuning hammer?

Tines can drift, so a hammer is useful. GECKO and ORORA list one.
