How to Fix Faded Printouts When Text and Images Look Weak

Faded printouts are most often caused by a draft or economy mode, a low supply of ink or toner, the wrong paper setting, or dried residue at the print head. Check the settings first, because they cost nothing and fix many cases. If the page is still pale, move on to supplies and cleaning.

How to Fix Faded Printouts When Text and Images Look Weak

Step 1: Check the Print Settings

  1. Open the print dialog and look at the quality setting. Draft, economy or toner-saving modes lighten the page on purpose.
  2. Switch to normal or best quality and print again.
  3. Confirm the paper type matches what is loaded. A plain-paper setting on photo paper, or the reverse, can look washed out.
  4. Look for a density or brightness control in the printer menu and make sure it is at its normal value.

Step 2: Look at the Supplies

  • On an inkjet, check the level display for any empty color or black cartridge or tank.
  • On a laser, remove the toner cartridge as your manual shows, then rock it gently from side to side to spread the powder, and put it back.
  • Make sure protective tape or plastic from new supplies was removed.
  • If a cartridge is old or has been out of use for a long time, it may have dried out and need replacing.

Step 3: Clean and Test

Printer type What to try What you should see
Inkjet Print the nozzle check pattern, then run one cleaning cycle More complete lines in the second pattern
Laser Wipe dust from the paper path with the printer off and cool Even tone across the page
Either Try a fresh sheet from a different pack Same or better result on new paper

Never touch the drum surface or hot parts in a laser printer, and follow the maker’s safety instructions at every step.

Step 4: Check the Paper and the File

Damp or very absorbent paper can soak up ink and look dull. Store paper in its pack, flat and dry. Also look at the document itself. Light gray text or low-contrast graphics print as pale marks no matter what the printer does. Change the text to black and try again.

FAQ

Why are only some colors faded?

One color supply may be low or its nozzles may be partly blocked. Run the nozzle check to see which one is affected.

Could a screen setting fool me?

Yes. Screens are backlit and often brighter than paper, so a print can look duller by comparison. Compare it with another printout to be sure.

The Short Version

Begin with quality and paper settings, then check the supplies, clean the print head or paper path, and try fresh paper. If the pale look stays, the supply may need replacing.
